For this discussion, I am asking you to read at least four (4) essays posted at the This I Believe site (Links to an external site.). Then, provide your reactions/review in short 3-5 sentence paragraphs for each essay you have read. Please give us the essay’s author and title, and the URL to the essay, so we might read it if we’re inspired by your review. I am looking for comparative, quality consideration in your reading and reactions. Use the analytical skills you have learned this semester. Does the author meet the requirement of providing details to support generalizations and opinions? How does he/she do this? Respond to at least two of your peers’ posts.
What not to do: “I read this one essay about growing up the child of a single parent and how the writer thinks that’s the way to be raised. She went on and on about how great her mom was and how she went through so much. Reads like a mother’s day tribute to me. Fluff.”
What TO do: (one of four provided below, as example)
An essay by Joshua Yuchasz…This piece was written by a high school freshman and was not only published on the site, but also produced by NPR for broadcast. I was engaged in the essay initially, for I know someone with his illness (Asperger’s Syndrome)…but more, I was interested in it for I so agree with his point–we’re all different. Our differences make us unique (obviously) but the very different (he provides a list including Thomas Edison, etc) are often later revered as some of our greatest figures. I then clicked on the listen button, and I was ever-more connected to this kid Josh and his message.
