Expository Paper: The expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner.
Topic: The Power of Language Upon inspection of certain readings, evaluate how the language people use might not always reveal to others what they truly understand. This can be due to the fact that different groups of people choose to communicate in different ways or because one might not be fluent in a particular kind of language or expression. Maybe one’s vocabulary does not match the topic or environment in which they are called upon to express themselves. We will also discuss how writers can use language to express complex feelings and ideas, and thus transform the world in which we I have provided the 4 reading/sources used for this paper below and an additional one that is further down in the instructions (you’ll see why):
1. Mother Tongue – Amy Tan http://blogs.harvard.edu/guorui/2008/02/06/mother-tongue-by-amy-tan/
2. Only Daughter – Sandra Cisneros http://chawkinsteaching.weebly.com/uploads/1/2/9/7/12977279/only_daughter.pdf
3. It’s Good to Have a Guy – David Stanley
4. The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual – Dr. Viorica Marian and Anthony Shook
Write a paper showing how language can be a tool or an obstacle or some combination of both when it comes to effectively communicating and persuading others.
*I would like you to pick three out of the four essays, we will read for this section of the course and use them to support your analysis of how language can be a tool or an obstacle (or some combination of both) when it comes to effectively communicating and persuading others.
Some questions you might choose to address in this paper are as follows. (You don’t have to address all of them, but if you choose to address some, they can inform your thesis which will drive the scope of your paper.) The following is not an exhaustive list. Feel free to focus on something else that might help you answer the prompt. Just be sure to run your ideas by the instructor or the tutor.
How can language empower us to think and feel in new ways?
How can language attitudes hinder others from seeing our true value or intelligence?
How does knowing how to express ourselves in standard written communication act as a key to success in a professional environment?
How are some communities exploited in the United States because they are not able to speak or write standard English fluently?
You will also have to find one more source: an essay, chapters from books or a newspaper article, to name a few, that supports your view that language can be a tool or an obstacle to communication and/or success.
I have provided the additional source: Cognitive Persistence and Executive Function in the Multilingual Brain During Aging:
You are welcome to use your own experience as well and addtional sources of your choosing, if you would like to. This paper will be five typed pages long and double-spaced in a 12 point font. It will also include a works cited page, making it six pages in total.
If you can any questions please dont hestitate. I would like to be clear as possible with my instructions.
