Summary of Assignment: This assignment asks you to analyze the
monster or monsters in one of the three fairy tales we worked with in Unit 1
(“Red Riding Hood,” “Bluebeard,” and “Hansel and Gretel”). The essay will
include the three following sections with 2-3 paragraphs within each section: 1. What Makes a
Monster? Your job in the first section of the essay is to prove
that the ‘monster’ in your text is or is not a monster based on YOUR criteria
of ‘monster’. As Asma states, there is no clear definition of ‘monster.’ It
is up to each of us to decide for ourselves what it means to be a monster. The
goal for the first section of the essay is to write a clear definition of what
a monster means to you—what is YOUR definition of ‘monster’? Then based on your
criteria for ‘monster’ you will need to prove that the ‘monster’ in the text
actually is a monster or not. Use specific quotes and references to the text as
evidence to prove your point. Bring in quotes from Asma to help discuss and
explain your reasoning. 2. Monsters as
Fears and Anxieties Since monsters are symbolic of a culture’s fears and
anxieties, the second section of the paper needs to look at the monsters
metaphorically. What are the fears and anxieties that the monster/s in your
fairytale represent? Of course, there are far too many metaphorical fears and
anxieties to cover in one section of the paper. Choose 2-3 of the main
fears/anxieties and analyze what they are and how they are apparent in the
text. Use specific quotes from the fairytale in order to prove your points and
use Asma to help explain your discussion.
3. Benefits to Monsters Reading about or watching monsters has benefits to the
audience beyond a fun scare. The popularity of monsters is attributed to more
than just the frights. Watching and reading about monsters offers an audience
different ways to work with and out their fears and anxieties as well as
practice challenging situations. The goal for the final section of the essay is
to explain and discuss what the benefits to the audience are for reading about
the monsters in the fairytale you have chosen. Again, there are more benefits
to analyze than there is space, so choose 2-3 benefits to focus the paragraphs.
