Research Paper Non-Western Sport
Your assignment is to research and write about a non-Western sport. You need to choose a country with a sport that is unfamiliar to you and is not played in the U.S./Canada/Europe/Australia. Look for something that you would be unlikely to hear about in a typical day in the U.S. For example, buzkashi (an Afghani goat-grabbing sport). Describe the sport using academic tone, indicating not only the basic description, but also the social, historical, and cultural importance of the sport to the people who play it.
Using APA format (title page, running head (note different running heads on title page and subsequent pages), page numbers properly placed, citing in-text and including a properly formatted references page, write approximately 2-3 pages, using a serif font such as Georgia or Times New Roman, 10 to 12 point type, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, with correct spelling and punctuation. You do not need to do an abstract. Direct quotes require page numbers, or paragraph numbers if from non-paginated web sources. Italicize non-English words.
Avoid: biased language (e.g., “this sport is weird/not popular in USA/crazy”, using first- and second- person wording (e.g., use of “I” “you” “we”), fluffing (excessive quotes) or drawing unwarranted general conclusions (e.g., “as proof of its value, this sport is sure to be included in the Olympics someday”). If you use a source, it must be referenced BOTH in-text and in the References. That includes videos.
Include: Title page, Introduction, body, conclusion, references
Plan: sometimes sources need to be requested via Interlibrary Loan (ILIAD), which can take several days. Speak with a librarian for help with this – it’s a fantastic free resource! Expect to have to edit, sometimes several times, before and possibly after submission. Pay special attention to details in References, and follow APA text models, checking even if you get a citation from a generator or even the library online catalog.
How many references? At least one video (because you most likely have never seen this sport), plus three reliable/scholarly sources. Avoid websites targeted to kids and tourists. * If your reference has “libproxy” or “galegroup” or “ebscohost” or “cengage” in it, it is not accessible to the public. That doesn’t mean you can’t use it, but please go a step further and find a URL that can be accessed.
Be sure to properly credit anything not your own original thought. You should use at least 3 reputable sources plus at least one video resource (do not use Wikipedia)
