In NRSC, you looked at the interconnectedness of housing and poverty using the BARHII model. For this course, we use the concept of health justice in order to be effective advocates. The goal of advocacy is policy change. It is a strategy to influence policy makers when they make laws and regulations, distribute resources, and make other decisions that affect peoples’ (our patients) lives. Advocacy informs:
– The creation of policies where they are needed (and/or when none exist)
– Reforming harmful or ineffective policies
– The assurance that sound policies are implemented and enforced.
Select a health equity issue. It can be related to your MSN project or a policy that you are passionate about. From a health justice perspective, analyze the issue in order to frame/create/reform policy as it relates to your selected health equity issue (3-5 pages). You may consider your topic within your group’s selected county OR you may select another health equity topic. This is different from a health promotion/risk reduction recommendation, however they are related. See Table 6.1 in the health justice text for examples (income, housing, education, legal status, literacy, personal safety), but there are others (geography, language, trauma/resilience). If you have questions, use the Discussion Board for the course or email me (firstname.lastname@example.org).
