Students will choose one of the following prompts and write a 3-4 page essay based on that prompt:
1) In your own personal narrative, how has language shaped your identity? Compare your
experience with language, dialects and accents to one of our readings in class.
2) In your own personal narrative, describe an experience as a victim of discrimination or a
witness to it. How did you overcome it? What is your message to your audience? Compare your
message to one of the author’s we read in class.
3) In your own personal narrative, describe a moment or event that has changed your world
view/outlook/perspective. What was the impact? What changed? Relate it to any of the readings
we have covered thus far.
4) In your own personal narrative, describe an event that is meaningful to you, and explain what is
so meaningful about it. Relate it to the any of the readings covered thus far.
All essays, including narratives, have a thesis. Your thesis for this narrative should directly address the
question being asked in the prompt. It should be the overall theme of your narrative. It should be the
message you wish to convey. You will include this in your introduction and bold your thesis, so that
everyone is clear on what you think your thesis is.
