Read all three of the poets listed for this Module: Adrienne Rich,( At a Bach Concert, Storm warming, Living in Sin) Emily Dickinson (Hope is the thing with feathers, After great pain, a formal feeling comes, I heard a fly buzz- when I died, My life had stood- a loaded gun, I stepped from Plank to Plank, Tell all the truth but tell it slant) , and W.B. Yeats (The lake Isle of Innisfree, All things can tempt me, easter 1916, the second coming, lead and the swan, Sailing to Byzantium)
Then, pick one poet to analyze. In a 1000 word essay, compare and contrast two poems by the same poet, taking into consideration the poetic techniques we have read and discussed, including situation, setting, theme, tone, language choices (words) and order (arrangement), visual imagery, and figures of speech, sound effects and external (traditional) forms.
The ultimate goal of your thesis and subsequent analysis is not “oil and water,” not Poem A does this and Poem B does that, but rather a synthesis. What new insight do we gain about the poems that we would not have known if we had read them in isolation? What do we learn now that we didn’t know before?
Outside of the provided Norton resources, do not consult the internet or bring in other sources, cited or otherwise, besides the poems as they appear in our textbook. Include proper MLA intertextual citations and include a Work Cited.
