You are not answering a questionnaire, rather you are building a cohesive story. So rather than answering all questions prompts below, think of writing an exposition to someone who has no knowledge of the topic (family or friend) and you are just sharing what you have learned in class.
Do not write a direct transcript of what happened in the video, I have already watched it many times over. Rather focus on writing an exposition/description/narrative of the ideas contained within, and their relation to class, higher math and people involved in developing them. Always welcome to complement your writing with properly cited resource material from other books or websites.
Font used must be 11, no bigger and not smaller.
1 inch margins on all sides (top, bottom, right and left)
Must include a complete REFERENCE (citations) of sites or sources accessed to make the paper, this does not count toward the minimum 1.5 pages of normal text length. References and citations should be written in a separate new (third) page.
What is a googol, googolplex and Graham’s number? What is infinity?
What ‘size’ of infinity are the counting numbers, prime numbers, odd numbers, and rational numbers (fractions)?
Describe to a layman the paradox of the hotel infinity
What do you get when you add something (be it finite or infinite) to infinity?
What do you get when you subtract something (be it finite or infinite) from infinity? Do you always get a single answer and if not why?
How was the ‘next level’ of infinity discovered?
How can mathematics function if we do not allow the concept of infinity to exist?
What led to the mental breakdown of the mathematician Cantor?
If we allow a monkey to type at random for an infinite amount of time, what can they produce?
Is the universe finite or infinite?
How can we compute the distance that we would need to travel in order to find another copy of ourselves? If so, what does this number look like?
Anything that you have learned from the documentary, our book, links below or class lectures that you want to share are connected to the end of ch 2, the mathematics of infinity.
The primary source of your essay should be the previous documentary, our book or lectures, but if for some reason you need more material you can also watch the following 1.5-hour panel discussion on infinity from the worlds science festival:
Or the following TED talk
