discuss in class, or something entirely different.
Each article will be worth a maximum of 20 points. You can do as many as you like up to a maximum of five. If you are going to do all 5, your first paper must be turned in by Sept 24. You may only turn in one paper at a time. Your last paper must be turned in by Nov 19. The articles must come from reputable sources, and must be an actual article (several pages, not just a short notice or summary). They can be from a scientific journal, but articles in magazines such as Time and Newsweek are certainly acceptable. You may also read chapters from a book, but not textbooks. You may NOT use internet sites such as: MSN.com, CNN.com, Wikipedia, ScienceDaily, etc. They have great information, but these typically provide summaries of journal articles. I want you to read the original journal articles. Please come see me if you have any questions about whether a topic or source qualifies.
I would like you to write a summary, in your own words, of the article. Unless essential, please do not include quotes. I encourage you to include your opinion, but keep your opinion brief. The majority of the summary should be about the article. The summary must be at least 1 full page (typed, double spaced, one inch margins, 12 pt font) but not more than two pages in length. At the top the first page I would like you to give your name and a citation for the article. Don’t include the date, course title, etc. The citiation must provide the information seen in the paragraphs below, in EXACTLY the given format. I will deduct points if you do not follow this format. Yes, I know this is not the same format most of you have used before! I am an ecologist. I like this format. Please humor me. You do not have to include a copy of the article, that’s why you gave me the citation. If the article in not available on the internet or in our library, I would appreciate a scanned copy of it, along with your summary. Internet sources should include the web address as part of the citation (see below).
Examples: (first 2 are articles, the third is a book and the fourth is an internet resource)
