At the centre of this course is your “sitting spot.” This is a green space of your choosing, someplace out of doors but not far outside the orbit of your everyday life. Your sitting spot might be a bench in a nearby park it might be a particular place in your backyard reserved just for this activity; it might be someplace a short walk (e.g. two minutes) from your home.
For this semester, I’d like you to try to build a relationship with your sitting spot. Wherever your sitting spot is, in the city or the country, you are asked to visit that spot minimum once a week, and at different times of day. Building a relationship with a place is not unlike building a relationship with a human being: you just have to put in the work. I’d ask that you do your course readings there, whenever possible. I’d like you to keep a journal, and make regular (either neatly printed by hand or typed) journal entries that a) describe what you observe at your sitting spot, b) make recourse to the relevant chapters from Drew Monkman’s Nature’s Year, and c) critically reflect on course materials on a week-by-week basis. Any journal entry that fails to incorporate all three of these elements will receive a grade no higher than 60%. A grade of 80% may include, in addition to these three criteria, photographs, etchings, drawings, clippings, and anything else that catches your eye. You are asked to write a special two-page single-spaced journal entry on This Place: 150 Years Retold, the book assigned for reading week; a journal submitted without this entry – without covering This Place – will receive a grade no higher than 60%. Journals are to be submitted online, in a single Word document that you will add to throughout the semester. Due October 22nd. Must make journal entries every day of the week and each week you must write a single-spaced page of what you observed while sitting in your spot. Also, you must compare these to the links I will provide to you. Please incorporate or try to incorporate all the links provided in order to get me a good mark. If you fail to do so this assignment will not be graded a higher grade than 60% which is unacceptable! In the 6 pages please include a special two-page single-spaced journal entry on This Place: 150 Years Retold, the book assigned.
