LIBERTY VS SECURITY ESSAY
Since the events of September 11, Columbine, and now the Covid-19 pandemic, security has increased to meet the threat of terrorism, violence, and disease. Some individuals claim that the increased security measures are an infringement of their Constitutional rights. What is the correct balance between civil liberties and security in a healthy society?
You will research the issue, develop an opinion, and write a persuasive essay demonstrating your opinion. Your opinions must be supported by documented information. The essay will be graded in terms of the strength of the arguments and the information provided as support for these arguments. In addition, organization, clarity, and good use of sentence structure, grammar, spelling, etc. will be considered as part of the grade.

Research – The purpose of the research is to find additional information to support your position and arguments. You will be required to provide a bibliography used in the preparation of the essay. You will be required to provide a works cited page detailing all sources cited in the essay. You will be required to use at least two sources and follow standard MLA format.
Outline – You will prepare a preliminary outline for the essay containing the following:
A thesis statement clearly stating your position with supporting arguments.
At least three main arguments in support of your position.
Information you will used to back up each of the arguments.
Draft copy of the essay – In this step you will write the essay. It should be written in the standard 5-paragraphy essay format (introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion). The introduction should include background on the topic of your essay and a thesis statement. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence that states the argument being presented in that paragraph. The conclusion should restate the thesis and provide a summary of the argumentation.
Final essay – Turn in a final, revised, edited essay.
