For this assignment, you will write a narrative essay about a specific event from your past. This paper must be a true story, based on your own life. This is not fiction. However, it should be fun and easy to write, because there is no research required, just your own memory.
Directions: Choose an event to reflect upon. It is not necessary to make deeply personal revelations about yourself or your family or friends in order to write a good reflection. The event itself does not need to be striking. It is your memories and interpretation that will make your essay interesting to readers. The event you are writing about does not have to be a major milestone; your reflection does not need to be a lengthy epic. Small events can be as interesting and significant as big ones. Pick a specific moment in time; don’t try to cover your entire senior year in high school.
*Paper must be at least 750words (approx. three typed pages) in length.
*Paper must be typed and double-spaced.
*Use MLA format.think about your own life, analyze issues you have dealt with, and figure out how the story of coping and overcoming, or failing to cope and overcome, can connect you to your readers and enlighten them.
A good way to sum up the challenge of writing a narrative essay is that it is an essay about you but for your readers. If it is just about you and for you, then the “wild bore” factor comes into play. The purpose for writing is unclear. Your ability to write an essay that communicates and connects to readers will be haphazard at best.
With that said, to write an effective narrative essay, you, as the writer, have to be invested in the essay, too. You have to care about it and have a conviction that you have something meaningful to say. Thus, the first communication problem has to do with you. What can you write about? What do you want to write about? What will motivate you to write?
Basically something that made an impact in your life. Good or bad …just something that will keep everone intrigued
