A. Follow formatting guidelines (double space, 12 point Times New Roman, use the proper heading that’s in the syllabus, number your pages, give it a GOOD title, center your title and do not put it in bold or underline it.
B. Be sure you are writing a HOW TO paper. Your job is to teach the reader HOW TO do something. Remember that “food and drink” papers are not acceptable. Meaning that you can’t write about “how to bake a cake” for example.
C. Remember, you have TWO to FOUR pages. So you must narrow this topic. Don’t write about “how to drive a car” (too big). But you could write about “driving in heavy traffic” or “how to be a distracted driver.” Again, if you need help narrowing your topic, let me know.
D. Choose something that’s PERSONAL to you and unique. ANYONE can write about “how to succeed in a job interview.” That’s pretty generic. So it’s kind of boring. Choose something that relates to your experiences, talents, hobbies, work, etc. Write something that says something NEW and interesting. Write a paper that not everyone in your class could also write (like “how to be a bad driver”). Hopefully the sample papers help you to think about some good ideas for yourself.
